New Music review

Hey, blogspot readers - SouthSide's up to her ears with new music ...locally and nationally as well as internationally with more arriving into her inbox every single day! There's something for everyone to enjoy this spring / summer of 2015.

She highly recommends checking out the following artists/bands...

“Poison the Well” – single
Movement I
Textures of Lions
Local band rockin’ the stage with their brand of hard-hitting, guitar experimental/progressive rock, blogspot readers to which had this reviewer liking its gritty sound (especially during track 1 – “The Golden Age”) …plenty of wicked riffs to keep the head banging to the intense yet raw rhythms …basically, this band lets its music do most of the talking for them in between lyrics (sung by front man Chris Pacific) …SouthSide recommends listening to “Pyramid Sky” for that dreamy electric pop feel as well as the featured single “Poison the Well”.

“Beneath the Sun” (ft Elisa Coia) – single
Creature In The Woods
Creature In The Woods
Check out this single by Brooklyn, NY producer (name withheld) who combines an interesting music flavor of psychedelic, dance, hip hop, downtempo and electronic with guest vocalists in this EP release. What SouthSide enjoyed about this artist retains a rhythmic floetry that’s not heavy relied upon the bass, blogspot readers. Sometimes, the tracks contain a light and airy feel as heard in the featured single “Beneath the Sun”…or take a dreamy cosmic trip around the universe in “In My Spaceship” (ft Elisa Coia and Stan Ipcus on vocals) …truly loved the bounce and rhythmic style …perfect for a club/dance scene.

“Trial and Error” – single
Silhouette
Calais
From the land of down under, comes this recent  EP release by Calais in which had SouthSide and test audience rockin’ to the band’s rock alternative sound …the reviewer enjoyed the vibrant guitar rhythms while the teen liked the danceable beat …says it’s what kids today like listening to especially during Calais’ featured single “Trial and Error”.

“White Dress” (ft Deutsch Duke)
Set Mo
From the Aussie duo, Nick and Stu, Set Mo has brought a refreshing sound as well as revival to House music, blogspot readers, with this single. Wow …that’s all this reviewer can say about the featured single “White Dress” (featuring vocalist Deutsch Duke) …it has a vibrant floetry yet rhythmic tone that’s perfect as a cool down effect at the club (also another club track that’s not heavy on the bass but will keep your club attendees glued to the floor).

“Frighteners” – video single
Situations
Check out this heavy metal from McAllen, TX that’s rockin’ YouTube with their latest singe – “Frighteners”, blogspot readers …the video has all of the right amount of creepiness as well as head banging, raw screamo rock to smack your face with …this reviewer suggests turning up the volume on the highest setting just to feel every ounce of intensity from front man Chris’ vocals and guitars.

“Legend” – single
One
Parlement
From Ale Maria, Spain, it’s Anglo-Spanish rock that has this raw edgy yet gritty music appeal and feel that had this reviewer’s head banging to the band’s featured track – “Legend” …she was totally digging the retro sound …so fast and furious and sometimes quite dirty – that’s how she likes her rock-n-roll, blogspot readers.

“Liquidator” –single
Uptight
The Dead Heavys
This reviewer is no stranger to rock music from the Emerald Isle however she was blown away (again) by what’s rockin’ across the pond by The Dead Heavys. Their latest single “Liquidator” immediately had SouthSide addicted to its psycho rock pop sound …featuring Aisling Browne of Cut Once (as guest vocalist – adding some intense yet soulful tone to this song), this single features plenty of excitable energy that builds up to “in your face” blast of music and vocals to get you groovin’ to the rhythms …now, she’s ready to hear the rest of the album.

Electric Brain Activity
Maniac du Jour
Lots of brain activity coming from this Italian band that includes a healthy dosage of heartfelt ballads and head banging grit of rock-n-roll, blogspot readers. SouthSide had a fun time rockin’ her ears to the electric soundwave vibin’ throughout this album due Maniac’s use of various genres represented. She recommends checking out the acoustic ballad “Red Butterfly” before getting smacked in the ears with tons of anger and guitar grit of “My Personal War” …this is where front man Paride makes you feel the frustration within his raspy vocals. She also recommends riding the electric dreamwave with Maniac in “Desert River” that will definitely float your brain activity away as you enjoy the calming, soothing effect of the guitar rhythms at the end of the album.

“On The Right Side” – single
By The Ocean By The Sea
Buffalo Sunn
Another band from the Emerald Isle rockin’ the local airwaves with their brand of alternative / cosmic rock sound. Buffalo Sunn had this reviewer (as well as the test audience) instantly grooving to the rhythmic vibe in which the featured single garnered a HUGE “thumbs up” from the teen …it’s something she’s currently into with other notable bands like Artic Monkeys, Cage The Elephant, Foster The People. SouthSide is looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

Remission
New Politicians
Post-punk / alternative fans, SouthSide has found the “perfect” band for you! She suggests checking out New Politicians (from NJ) and their latest album– Remission just released last week. Seven tracks to which this reviewer found herself immediately submersed into the dark, moodiness (featuring plenty of electric post-punk rock) heard in featured songs like “Cut A Hole” and “Killer on the Mend”. Taking their cue and sound from the legendary post-punk band, The March Violets, blogspot readers, shouldn’t expect these guys to imitate and/or re-create …nope – they have elevate it their own style and electric soundwave. Though it was SO hard to choose which to spotlight, she was instantly hooked with “Revelator” and the dark poetry of “Images” …even “The Idealist” left her thinking but wanting more.

Until next time, support your local scene,
SouthSide

The Wave (2011)

Autocracy – a system of government by one person with absolute power or unlimited authority over others

It took a mere week for the heavens and earth to be created …the same amount of time for a high school experiment to begin as a classroom project to an out-of-control social movement with dangerous repercussions, blogspot readers.

That’s the premise of this intense psychological drama in a German film titled “The Wave”, based on an actual experiment created by Ron Jones. This move takes the viewer within the ideals and thoughts behind the seeds of fascism during one week when a popular teacher (Jurgen Vogel as Rainer Wenger) abandons his usual unorthodox methods for a project about “autocracy”. The subject itself might be unpopular to him but for the students, it instantly gets them interested …soaking up the information like sponges each day. They take those ideals (such as strength in unity, discipline and action is power, and the notion of working as one team) to heart, blogspot readers, thus they soon call themselves (and the project) The Wave.

Yet, it soon becomes more than just a classroom project. The feeling and movement spreads beyond the classroom …and spills into the open as the students “recruit” new members to join. The gradual process of The Wave changing into the social movement is frightening since it also separates as well as divides friendships and relationships when free-thinking ideals are not welcomed within the group. Besides the change effecting the students of this project, it also changes the Rainer as well. He’s no longer the unorthodox, rock-n-roll rebel wearing Ramones or The Clash tee and radical amongst the teaching staff as we first see him at the beginning of the project but soon an autocratic leader of a growing Wave movement. In a way, think of the rise of Adolf Hilter and the Third Reich.

Scary, huh, blogspot readers?  Even Rainer questions the class “…so you don’t think there could be another dictatorship in Germany…” to which a student named Jens replies “…No, we are too enlightened now…” Still this project proved even under an “enlightened” society seeds of fascism or autocratic thinking can sprout from a thought or idea. The Wave society soon have their own insignia, uniform code (white shirts and jeans), salute and communal thinking as one. The project is successful however it begins to go too far …gets out of control especially when one student (Tim portrayed by Frederick Lau) who’s somewhat the class loner but gradually emerges as a leader  thus not wanting the project to end.

No spoilers here, blogspot readers, but SouthSide highly recommends checking out The Wave in which writer/director Dennis Gansel wonderfully exposes the human psyche and seduction that comes with fascist thinking and ideals. Visibly, you watched the effects this project has on the students and others around them each day budding at a gradual pace towards something powerfully dangerous. SouthSide liked how this progression was quite subtle and sneaky rather than leaping out to smack you in the face. And, yes, there was that swell of national pride of being a part of The Wave (even this reviewer felt as the project reached its height at the latter part of the week) but you’ll also feel the fear of what happens to those not part of The Wave when the group starts viewing themselves being better than the rest. You sort of get the sense Rainer is blind to what’s happening but he’s not totally oblivious either because he too fears (towards the end of the movie) the potential danger where the project’s heading.

The Wave (shown in German with English subtitles) also has a couple of bonus features that SouthSide recommends viewing to get a better (and deeper) perspective about the movie. This reviewer highly recommends watching the interview with Ron Jones (history teacher and creator of The Third Wave experiment) who explains why and how the German populace could accept the actions of the Nazi regime during World War II and then view the “behind the scenes” which went into making The Wave.

SouthSide gives The Wave her 4 ½ thumbs up.

“…it’s very sensual music …so loosen up…”

Hey, blogspot readers, it’s a global dance party for SouthSide’s first Friday night back around town!

Tonight, she’s getting her Reggae-world fusion with her new friend, Kreyol Roots at The Old Town School of Folk Music (inside the Szold Music & Dance Hall). However, for this exclusive adventure, she’s not only just listening and reviewing the music …she’s also grooving to a few new dance steps she learned blogspot readers.

So what really happens at a Global Dance Party? Well, besides meeting or making new friends, you get about thirty (30) minutes of real dance instruction to accompany the type of music you’re about to enjoy during the rest of the evening. So, it’s all about dancing …having some fun and a new learning experience. Tonight’s instructor before Kreyol Roots performed on “stage” was Margaret.

The dance instruction time consisted of loosening up the participants hips, stomach and butt with a few basic rhythmic African steps. One thing to know, blogspot readers, no prior dance experience is necessary …just the willingness to join the class and try something new and fun. And what a fun time it was! Moving the hips …shaking the bottom to the lively West African drumbeats …feeling the rhythmic spirit of the music until we were doing the dance steps on our own.

Now, that we were warmed up with our new dance steps, it was time for us to put the steps and music together while Kreyol Roots rockin’ the “stage”. This reviewer highly recommends checking out this local band’s eclectic fusion of guitar rock mixed with vibrant West African rhythms, Caribbean drums and melodic keyboard for soul. It’s the kind of music that truly encourages you to dance …not the just feel or listen to the music, blogspot readers, and you won’t be sitting on the sidelines too long. The rhythmic floetry kept SouthSide’s feet tapping to the beat and her hips swaying to the African sound. Don’t be afraid …the band wants you to feel your love for them and their music. Exciting …fresh and fun all around in which many of the participants (after some encouragement from the band) took to the dance floor. Yep, it was really a global dance party now! If you want to feel the sensual rhythms of world fusion that will keep you dancing, then SouthSide highly recommends checking out Kreyol Roots at the band’s next live performance. And you don't have to take SouthSide's word ...her teen daughter enjoyed herself though not wanting to dance. For more information, visit http://www.kreyolroots.com.

Other upcoming Global Dance Party events will feature Cajun music by Feufollet (on April 3), the rare combination of Calypso, reggae and acoustic instrumentation by Kobo Town (April 10) or music from Cuba’s Golden Age of the 40s and 50s by Los Perros Cubanos (April 24). For more information and tickets, visit http://www.oldtownschool.org.
