More fun for this roving adventurer about town, blogspot readers.

Tonight, she’s attending another SOLD OUT show featuring the lively group HoneyHoney currently on tour with singer/songwriter Sam Lewis and Ryan Joseph Anderson (with his band) – both from TN before heading out to Bottom Lounge for a bit of Xbox gaming and pinball with Jonathan aka Circuitry.

Though feeling his opening performance was better within an intimate setting than a mid-size venue, this reviewer recommends checking out the soulful country/blues singer-songwriter Sam Lewis. She enjoyed how this musician performed his set with a solemn yet tender acoustic style which wonderfully highlighted the emotions in his voice at the beginning until Ryan joined him for the rest of the set. Now as a duet, Sam’s music received that lively boost of rhythmic tempo and upbeat sound within the blues/country tone, blogspot readers. even though continuing to have a downtempo feel (sometimes). It was a good set yet this reviewer felt he should have jazzed it up a little instead of performing long winded ballads which at times lost most of the crowd attending this sold out show. After sharing the stage with opening act Sam Lewis, Ryan Joseph Anderson and his band was ready to kick off his CD release show with a rockin’ bang that immediately livened up the atmosphere inside this venue. In no time, this singer/songwriter switched the mood and tone of the lineup from somber love ballads to lively rhythmic tempos which had many grooving to the beat, blogspot readers, though keeping the music inside a country/alternative sound. This reviewer instantly liked the energy flowing throughout the room while listening to songs like When The Bees Went Mad to which Ryan’s vocals got a little rougher and deeper on the lyrics amidst the song’s danceable groove and gritty pop sound. It was the right song to push this crowd towards a festive mood and far away from the moody doldrums felt earlier until briefly taking that same energy down a bit for acoustic riffs inside subtle crescendo rise from the band backing him in the song that followed. SouthSide liked how his incorporated a touch of gospel/organ tone to highlight his heartfelt vocal pitch before zooming back to that intense energy of country rock and more. It was a nice balance, blogspot readers, of energize momentum and acoustic ballads which allowed the crowd to hear different side of Ryan’s voice whether it was heartfelt emotions or raw falsetto while tapping their toes to his upbeat country style. Sadly, SouthSide couldn’t stay for the end of Ryan’s performance (because it was getting too crowded thus causing the room to get overheated) yet she does recommend checking out Ryan Joseph Anderson with his band as he tours with Sam Lewis and HoneyHoney. There would have been a full of Geek Out/Freak Out for you, blogspot readers, however it was scheduled during Game 1 of the NHL playoffs featuring Chicago Blackhawks playing against St. Louis Blues ...the triple OT lost didn’t help generate the right crowd SouthSide’s friend Jonathan aka Circuitry was hoping for. Still she did spend some time testing out the pinball game selections featured in the upstairs Volcano Room of Bottom Lounge. Hopefully this monthly event (happening every 3rd Thursday) returns in May (SouthSide plans to review it again) with more gamers from all levels testing their skills against each other while Jonathan spins industrial to post-punk and more until 2a (or earlier). Events like this cannot survive and/or thrive without full support from fans like you, blogspot readers.

“Does Chicago still believe in music?” ~ Man On Earth

Man On Earth

Welcome to SouthSide’s busy spring break week, blogspot readers! For the rest of the week, this roving reviewer will be visiting different corners of Chicago’s vibrant local scene from Roscoe and Lakeview to West Loop and more ...sometimes covering two events in one night. Nope, there will be little to no sleep for this party queen. Tonight, she’s hanging out with her friends Miggs at Elbo Room who were touring with New Yorkers Man On Earth (http://www.manonearth.com) and Open Air Stereo (http://www.openairstereo.com) before heading northward on Lincoln Avenue to Fizz Bar & Grill for Rouge! Chicago’s Electro Swing party featuring DJs Vourteque and Mr Automatic spinning until 2a. And this is merely the beginning to her fun adventures around town, blogspot readers. She hightly recommends checking out rockers Man On Earth that opened the night’s lineup with an awesome rendition of Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony besides performing originals like We’re The Dreamers and Bang Bang Bitch for their Chicago fans. Using visual imagery to enhance the experience, the moving pictures gave each song depth and meaning ...sparking your sensory and auditory perception to the fullest.

Before they rocked the downstairs main stage at Elbo Room, SouthSide had the extreme privilege of chatting with Don, Michael, Walker and John aka Miggs in between munching on pizza about the upcoming self-titled album, Chicago’s snowy weather, Walker’s garlicky topping on pizza and much more. So what made these “...real cool idiots [acting like] chamaeleons [in a] passionate terminator [mode with] handsome certainty...” uniquely describe the band this way? Well, blogspot readers, according to front man, Don, “...we’re really feeling about the direction [it’s taking]...” before adding how it sort of felt like a rebirth. In the past, Miggs had played to different set list as well as touring with different bands while trying to discover who they (as a band, musicians and individuals) were. In SouthSide’s honest opinion, Don and the guys seemed very confident about this new direction they’re taking together as a band. That’s when this reviewer (after she and the others watched Walker put almost a whole bulb of garlic on his slice of pizza) asked them about their current release 15th and Hope and how did it compare to the other releases. Little did she know they were preparing to release new self-titled one with the help of producer, the late Phil Ramone. For Don, it was the first time he ever worked with a band where “...everyone knows their place...” and “...everyone had a part co-writing a song or lyrics...” for the new album. Phil was the tie-breaker for the band (when needed) subtly guiding them to the point where they needed to be, blogspot readers. “...He gave us freedom as long as the vocals, guitars, lyrics were good...” And Miggs assured this reviewer that they put everything they had into this latest project recommending fans to check out the teaser single – The Drifter.
 

While on tour, blogspot readers, Miggs is constantly testing ...re-working ...switching their set list around to see what does and/or does not work with that particular audience of the night. Yes, they are watching to see how you react to certain songs. “...it’s kinda of a fuel for us...” Miggs told this reviewer. Sometimes they’re a kind of band that shoots from the hip while performing a rock show with some covers tossed in. This band has been known to do a montage of cover songs like Wrecking Ball stuck somewhere in the middle of their song – High Ground (coincidentally Walker and John attended a Mylie Cyrus concert) or Rick Springfield’s Jesse’s Girl. However on this tour, the band were doing mostly new material as well as the classic stuff fans like, blogspot readers. And though Don has the biggest mouth (according to the front man himself), he sometimes might get his way but he rather feel Miggs should feel more like a band ...not simply four individual standing on stage performing night after night. After releasing 15th and Hope, they’re certain they know what they’re doing. So what really brings their fans back for more Miggs besides the music? Walker immediately said “...my naked body...” while Don chirped in with “...I think it’s us...” but Shelly (a fan who got the guys pizza to eat before the show) said nicely “...they’re real people ...down to earth ...more about this [being friendly and open] with their fans...” Still figuring out what to do with their summer months, you will find them flying to Japan (more specific Okinawa) at the end of May to perform at the USO for the troops stationed over there. Do expect to see and hear “...a lot of our content is on social media ...acoustic songs and video...” coming out around July. Lastly, the guys want you fans to know one more thing “...stay tuned ...the best is yet to come...” Another thing, Chicago blogspot readers, Miggs would like for you to know how friendly and welcome you made them feel during their stay here ...also learned not to ask for substitutions when ordering.

Miggs ...they were pumped and excited ...ready to rock the Elbo Room stage, blogspot readers. And rock the stage they did. Judging by the guitar picks this reviewer has from them – they were totally rockin’ it hard. Yet, this performance was much better and more exciting unlike the others she has seen. Why? Because each member of Miggs was actually having fun a time performing on stage. She could literally see it on their faces before, during and after their set, blogspot readers. Not saying they weren’t before but this Miggs performance featured more energized momentum to which the audience could not only hear it yet feel it as well. That same energy coming from the band during songs like Be Good To Yourself and Walls Come Down. While performing new stuff off the self-titled album (coming out in the fall), this reviewer enjoyed the way they were jamming together instrumentally and vocally with the tight four-part harmony as well as sometimes playfully sexing up their stage presence for the fans. Definitely not the Miggs SouthSide met years ago. No ...they seemed more focused on the direction of being a cohesive as a band which included entertaining the fans more than just looking like four guys standing on stage. More expressive on the lyrics and animated with the body language ...yes, this reviewer is totally liking the “new” Miggs rockin’ the stage in 2014. She highly recommends checking out the single, The Drifter and the powerfully emotional song Walls Come Down – both songs nearly brought the room to a standstill due to the heartfelt vocals wafting around the room that one could feel its emotional intensity from the lyrics. Just a short walk away from Elbo Room, blogspot readers, SouthSide suddenly stepped back into time where jazzy swing dancing reigned the local scene at Fizz Bar & Grill. Yep, it was another visit to Rouge! Chicago’s premiere event for electro swing ...and this reviewer arrived in time to join and dance amongst the crowd inside the upstairs loft of this bar/venue. Compared to where Electro! was held in the past, Fizz offered more room for dancing and conga lines snaking around the loft. Plenty of fashionably dressed participants covering different eras from Victorian to roaring 20s and beyond crowded the dance floor while DJs (Lord) Vourteque and Mr. Automatic spun their lively electro swing remixes until closing, blogspot readers. This monthly party was in full swing (no pun intended) as many danced, snapped fun photos and sipped on colorful cocktails in between socializing and enjoying their time amidst the throwback moment in time of fun. SouthSide loved how the red lighting gave this event that certain speakeasy feel and glow to perfectly set the atmosphere while the vintage montage of early Hollywood musicals and cartoons served as inspiration to what the night’s theme was all about.

However, there’s more to Electro! than just dancing. In middle of this event there’s two acts of special performances which features sultry burlesque by the lovely Lady Lenux. SouthSide got there to see the second performance in which the night’s special performer Sammy Tramp did her flea circus vaudeville act before Lady Lenux mesmerized the audience with a homeless-type of burlesque performance. It was her tribute for surviving the bitter Chiberia winter. Then it was back to more dancing and swingin fun, blogspot readers, before moving the party to Berlin for “Moonshine” fun until dawn. This reviewer highly recommends stepping back in time to attend Electro! Chicago’s premiere swing event when it happens again in May. And don’t fret if you don’t have the proper Victorian or flapper clothes like the others. You can simply “come as you are” like SouthSide and a few others did. Electro! is a about having a good time with other likeminded people, blogspot readers, which certainly attracts people of all ages, genders, orientations, etc under one roof. It doesn’t mater as long as you’re there to have FUN! Everyone’s friendly too ...so don’t be afraid to join the long conga line whipping around the dance floor or shaking your tail feather to the funky electro swing beat all night long. Oh one more thing – all this fun won’t cost you thing, blogspot readers. This event is always FREE. Next month’s Electro! (May 21) will not only feature the lovely Lady Lenux and another steamy burlesque act but also live performances by Dutty Moonshine (UK) and Lady India. “...enjoy this insanity...” ~ Combichrist

SOLD OUT!

Yep, blogspot readers, you definitely know it’s a hot show when the sign on the venue door reads loud and clear that the concert on this particular night is absolutely SOLD OUT. That was the case on Sunday when SouthSide and photographer Brian Lutz along with a crowd of many attended the Combichrist show featuring New Year’s Day and William Control at Bottom Lounge. This reviewer was excited to see William again after enjoying the last show he did a few months ago as well as seeing her friends, New Year’s Day, returning to Chicago. However, she was most excited to see Combichrist perform live on stage after being introduced to the band’s music when Joe Letz performed a rare DJ set at SubT the month prior. And the way things looked, blogspot readers, it was going to be one insanely wild and awesome night of music.

“...Am I insane?” ~ Ash of New Year’s Day

SouthSide is a creep. The “Creeps” (New Year’s Day fans) were out in full force tonight, blogspot readers, cheering, moshing as well as body surfing  amidst the hardcore sound from their favorite band – New Year’s Day. Currently on tour, this band kicked off the night of insane wild and craziness which featured intense primal screain’ vocals to fierce guitar riffs fueling excitement and much more throughout the venue. Though their opening set was quite brief, NYD still packed a lot of momentous punch into it ...not sparing one second of its allotted time with idle chatter or nonsense. No, this band came to rock and rock they did, blogspot readers. Performing songs like “Technical Party” and “Murder”, creeps were encouraged to crowd surf despite the venue’s strict policy. Plus there were a few wheelchairs somewhere close to the stage. SouthSide’s friend and photographer had a difficult time shooting photos since he was closer to the craziness that ensued near the stage during this performance (along with others to follow after NYD). Never had SouthSide seen a crowd respond so passionately to Ash (NYD female lead vocalist) whenever she would expressive the lyrics with not only the emotions in her voice but with body language (especially when she flipped off people) or to the thrilling shred of the guitars and thunderous drums inciting the wild crowd reactions. What an explosive start to tonight’s show. From beginning to end, it was an intense bang that left the “Creeps” begging for more blood and music, blogspot readers. This reviewer highly recommends checking NYD’s single “Angel Eyes” (featuring Chris Motionless) off the latest release Victim to Villain. “...Are you ready to have a good time?” ~ William Control

Yes, but before joining the crowd for all of the rockin’ fun and excitement, this reviewer sat down with William Control to discuss about his recently released new album, The Neuromancer. Stating that he’s excited about it, William went on to describe it as “...pretty fuckin’ filthy and amazing...” It’s close to what this reviewer would say about The Neuromancer after listening to an advance copy before its recent release, blogspot readers. Compared to his other albums, this artist mentioned he feels that he’s “...evolving as a songwriter, musician and producer...” besides the album also has a great cover (photo). William went on to tell this reviewer that The Neuromancer  “...is the prelude to the hate culture...” based off his book, Revelator: Neuromancer – about how he (the character) lost his mind before asking him if there’s a song that reflects his personality. “...All of them are bits and pieces of my personality...” says William, “...[it’s] about the character I created...” then emphatically adding “...buy it [The Neuromancer] and tell your friends to buy it...” This reviewer concurs with that statement wholeheartedly. She also recommends checking out William Control while he’s currently on tour. What could she say about seeing him for a second time, blogspot readers? Did she have fun like the first time? Yes yet this time she attended the show more like a fan. It was another thrilling time spent with this dapper gent of a musician who had this crowd pumped with excitement amidst the cloud of New World Order within hate culture which left many screaming for more. By now, the venue had swelled to near capacity for this mid-lineup performance that was shrouded in clouded electric glow, rockin’ guitars and digital tech rhythms to give each of William’s fans one long continuous party. However this reviewer noticed one thing about this performance compared to the last. He didn’t have much room to truly to move and perform at his fullest (because of the drum riser for Combichrist) yet that minor problem didn’t stop this musician from weaving his sexy magic on his loyal fans. Performing live versions of “Price We Pay”, “Revelator” and “Illuminator” off The Neuromancer, William’s commanding presence on stage excited everyone especially when he did a couple of song duets with Ash (of New Year’s Day) and invited a lucky female fan to join him. Though it wasn’t part of the set list, this reviewer suggests listening to her (and Brian’s) favorite song – “The Filth and The Fetish” for its deliciousness of chilling shivers which roll down your spine. William also performed her other two favorites – “Razor’s Edge” and “I’m Only Human” to end his (rather) short(er) performance than usual,  blogspot readers. Still it was a thrilling ride. And if you missed his Chicago performance this time, he promised to return again in the fall ...expect SouthSide to be there too when he does. For more information as well as checking out his album. “CombiFuckin’Christ” ~ the sign on the dressing room door

Combichrist

The moment finally had arrived, blogspot readers, for SouthSide to witness as well as experience the band as Combichrist. Recently, this reviewer had a taste of this band’s hardcore industrial/post-punk rock sound when Joe Letz performed a rare DJ set at Subterranean. However, what she experienced then didn’t compared what happened tonight. Describing Combichrist’s headlining show as insanely awesome, thrillingly wild and fan-frenzied chaos is a good start without giving too much away. SouthSide felt sorry for photographer Brian Lutz (who wasn’t able to snap any photos) was caught deep in the middle of fan-frenzied chaos that erupted soon after the band’s symphonic intro ended amidst thunderous cheers (and some jeers because the intro was a bit too long for a few impatient fans). Combi-fans packed all sides of this venue ...side to side ...front to back. Wall to wall bodies pumped up and ready as they welcomed their rock heroes loud and clear when finally appearing on stage. Fanatic shouts of “...hate disorder/ love destroyer...” filled the room, blogspot readers. There were moments when daring fans jumped on stage only to be instantly pushed off by the band’s videographer for a bit of crowd surfing. And if you thought it was wild amongst the hardcore Combi-fans, then you should have seen the band itself. The front man first appeared on stage wearing a red devil-like mask energetically inciting the crowd to react to each angered cry he made over the microphone. The other members of the band followed suited ...rockin hard amongst their various positions on stage even Joe high upon the synths riser. Yet with all of the fan frenzy going on, blogspot readers, it instantly warmed up the venue to the point that the slow moving fans couldn’t help alleviate the rise room temperature. Some of the Combi-fans this reviewer had seen were nearly passing out and had to sit near the emergency exit doors to catch that cool breeze blowing in. Don’t get SouthSide wrong ...she did enjoy the wild craziness at her first Combichrist performance. From the dark themes inciting anger and frustration over the societal ways and rules to the gritty roughness of the electric riffs off the guitars and vocal fervor constantly fueling their fans excitement. Sadly, the warmth inside this venue ended SouthSide’s fun earlier than expected. Still, she cannot wait until Combichrist returns again. Let’s go to the movies, blogspot readers!

That’s how SouthSide recently spent her Saturday. Munching on buttery popcorn, snacking on yummy Raisinettes, and drinking cool refreshing soda while watching her cinematic favorites on the big screen inside the Patio Theatre during Sci-Fi Spectacular 2014. This one-day movie-a-thon had a little something everyone, blogspot readers. There were monsters in space (George Melies’ A Trip To the Moon) and on land (Godzilla vs King Kong), fantasy (Legend and Pan’s Labyrinth), sci-fi adventure/action (Buckaroo Banzai and Escape From New York) and horror (Night Of The Living Dead and Dead Zone). Over fourteen hours of movies as well as a Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode, “Hush” and indie movie shorts in between attracted avid moviegoers of all ages. PLUS there were special appearances by Doug Jones (of Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy I & II) and Kyra Schon (aka Karen Cooper from Night Of The Living Dead). Besides viewing movies, fans could hang out ...browse and shop the many vendors such as Horribles, Kutcha Galleries participating at this event.

SouthSide with Doug Jones

Upon arriving, SouthSide spent a few minutes chatting with Doug Jones about his roles in Pan Labyrinth and Hellboy I & II wondering how he felt being the only English-speaking actor in a Spanish-speaking movie. He mention it was hard learning a language he doesn’t speak but he did learn his lines in Spanish “...though it was hard concentrating...” after hours of makeup and costuming. Did you know, blogspot readers, that Doug was also the White-faced monster (the one with eyes in its hands) in Pan’s Labyrinth? Yep, that was him. After the movie’s showing on the big screen, Doug noted something that this reviewer hadn’t noticed before. His “Faun” character in the movie ages backwards (from old to young with more agility in the end) as Ofelia continues to believe in herself and the moon princess tale. For SouthSide, to finally see this Guillermo Del Toro masterpiece on the big screen was one of the many highlights of her Sci-Fi Spectacular experience. It was more enjoyable than watching it on DVD because on a large screen she could totally immerse herself into the majestic fairy tale world as well as the realistic horror of the Spanish countryside during World War II created by this director. There was a funny moment during the screening of Pan’s Labyrinth in which a guy shouted “...there’s pizza in the lobby...” after the tense scene when Capt. Vidal’s men were shot by the rebels. Speaking of Guillermo Del Toro, Doug Jones just finished another movie with him in Toronto (currently in post production) however the actor was only allowed to reveal it’s about a haunted house. Here’s another movie fact about Doug Jones ...he was “Billy” in the Disney movie Hocus Pocus. Oh yeah - don't be afraid to get a special hug from this actor. He's a GREAT hugger who loves to give everyone cool doggie pets on the head!

Kyra Schon

At the opposite end of the concession hallway, Kyra Schon aka Karen Cooper from Night Of The Living Dead was setting up her photos and trowel jewelry for fans to purchase. Recently, this reviewer was lucky enough to interview the woman behind the iconic horror character but meeting her in person was a chance of a lifetime, blogspot readers. SouthSide could simply spend hours with Kyra chatting about trivia bits and pieces about NOTLD as if the George A. Romero movie had just finished wrapping up yesterday because every memory is still fresh in Kyra’s mind. She remembers observing her friend Mimi jumping in her seat during the scene when the zombie hands came through the window of the farmhouse as well as the day Romero was delivering the movie to the distributor in New York when the news broke that Martin Luther King was assassinated. Kyra mentioned he (Romero) was worried it wouldn’t be shown because of the movie’s ending. She also mentioned that Duane Jones wasn’t the first choice to portray the character “Ben”. According to her, the role was designed for a burly trucker type until Duane Jones was given the opportunity to audition for the part which immediately blew everyone including the original guy picked to play the trucker character. Sadly, she never got the chance to see him again yet on the day of the premiere, Kyra received a dozen of roses that her first instant thought was they were from Duane. Her mother

did confirm her instinct was correct even though she would learn the truth years later. During the NOTLD screening, SouthSide mostly sat in the darkness of the theatre wondering if Kyra was watching us and our reactions while watching the movie especially her scenes. Still, to finally view this Romero horror classic was a big thrill for this reviewer. From  Johnny’s iconic line “...they’re coming to get you, Barbara...” to Karen Cooper’s only line “...I hurt...” in which had many within this packed theatre cheering. More cheers were aplenty while Kyra did her iconic zombie scenes but then suddenly you could hear boos and jeers when Ben died. No matter how many times Kyra has seen this movie, she still cannot watch this one particular scene. After the screening, she talked about her time on the NOTLD set (in which she mentioned it was boring but fun) and the basement scenes were filmed in the basement of Romero’s studio while the farmhouse scenes were done 30 miles north of Pittsburgh in Evansville. You may (or not) have noticed there weren’t any scenes of Kyra’s character actually stabbing her mother with the trowel. She was stabbing into a pillow. And believe it or not, Kyra never had any bad dreams after filming this movie though The Omen and Carrie did disturbed and scared her, blogspot readers. However, it took conventions and events like Sci-Fi Spectacular that she learned to finally accept it was okay to be a part of the horror culture even though before (as a young teen) she didn’t like being the center of negative attention (Kyra was teased by a boy after the NOTLD premiere).An audience member asked if she (and/or Romero) ever thought about the movie’s societal significance back then to which she said that she hadn’t since they were simply making a horror movie not a statement about society.

Tom Kelly

Besides oohing and ahhing the fantasy world of unicorns, fairies and sprites as well as gigantic horns of Dark Lord (Tim Curry) of "Legend" (also starring a young Tom Cruise and Mia Sara) or laughing at the comical antics of John Big Booty and Jeff Goldblum’s surgeon character in a cowboy costume in the 80s cult classic Buckaroo Banzai (also starring Peter Weller, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow), SouthSide also spent some time browsing amongst the many vendors at Sci-Fi Spectacular 2014. One vendor in particular caught her eye, blogspot readers, because the sign read “Orphan Kitties”. And for $7, you could take home a unique Hello Kitty creation by illustrator Tom Kelly (a comic book artist by day) who dresses them up as your favorite comic superhero or villain. He told this reviewer that it started about 8 years ago at a comic convention in which he had drawn a Hello Kitty as Batgirl for a vendor’s young daughter. Before it was over, he had approximately 50 orders. “...all I was really doing was something nice fore this little girl...” Tom stated before adding that his creations are quite popular with people all ages from kids to women and men (evil super villains are his biggest sellers with them). SouthSide had to say “hi” to the guys at the shop where local horror personality, Svengoolie, get his rubber chickens flown for his Saturday television program – Horribles. She highly recommends checking out this horror collectable shop for its many rare to “hard to find” movie memorabilia to add to your collection. Next, she had to check another vendor who beautifully captured your favorite horror villains and heroes through this artist’s custom illustrations and designs. This reviewer also highly recommends checking out Chris Kuchta of Kutcha Galleries

She liked how this artist paid close to every intimate detail of each main character from movies like Big Trouble In Little China, Candyman (that was her favorite design), Hellraiser and many more including Nosferatu to which you could have framed for display. Chris’ art grabbed plenty attention throughout the Sci-Fi Spectacular with few of the attendees taking home some of his lovely artwork. Other vendors included two from comic shops that would make any fanboy (or fangirl) squeal with excitement over the various array of comic selections for sale (some were discounted too) and jewelry vendors like Asunder (http://www.asunder.deviantart.com) who will be also at Convergence 20 happening soon.

Sci-Fi Spectacular fans

In between movies, there were movie trailers (like one for Chrysalis – this reviewer liked the premise for this movie ...can’t wait to see it), shorts (Jack was very creepy and twisted) and a 50s inspired movie trailer contest in which local aspiring directors created movies from themes within that nostalgic era shot in black-n-white. Movies like Leave It Creature (the creature being the Beaver character), Corn Stalk, Let’s Invite Satan To the Slumber Party and more were voted by audience applause and cheers, blogspot readers. And the winner was – Corn Stalk! “...everyone loves a killer corn movie...” It was a fun day for all but you don’t have to take SouthSide’s word ...simply read the following quotes from those who were there. “...I’m happy to be here...” says her friend Germ the Ripper who also stated that Sci-Fi Spectacular was good so far and movie marathons are his bread and butter. Meanwhile, Donita had this to say “...[it’s] a lot of fun...” though she’s not a big horror fan but she’s a big 80s fantasy fan and was excited to see her favorite Legend on the big screen. Kirsten, who was one of many arriving at noon for the official start, told this reviewer she was excited to see Buckaroo Banzai on the big screen. “...pretty good lineup this year...” though her favorite Return Of The Living Dead wasn’t on it. Then, SouthSide met a woman named Andrea who also arrived at noon who told her that she has attended most of Terror In The Aisles events. “...Pan’s Labyrinth is my favorite [but] seeing Buckaroo Banzai on the big screen was kinda thrill...”Yet she was most excited to see Kurt Russell in Escape From New York because she had never seen it at all, blogspot readers.

I AM Fest

We are happy to announce we are in our fifth year of putting on one of the biggest, independently produced arts and music festivals. In the past we have worked with over 500 bands and artists and are continuing to give opportunities for local bands to network, get in front of new crowds and a chance to open up at one of Chicago’s premiere music venues. 

 

The Elbo Room presents I AM FEST 2014 INDEPENDENT ARTS & MUSIC FESTIVAL. It will host 10 bands at Chicago's very own HOUSE OF BLUES on AUGUST 16^th of 2014. There is just one thing missing... the MAIN STAGE OPENING BANDS FOR THE SHOW and THAT COULD BE YOU!

There will be several Battle of the Band contests held at the Elbo Room. Bands will be provided with a basic backline (Guitar/Bass Cabs minus heads and Basic drum set and hardware minus kick pedal, snare drum and cymbals). 20 min sets for each band will be judged by a music industry panel and voted on by fans in attendance. 

 

This unique BATTLE OF THE BANDS looks for talented musicians that put on a great show and can win over an audience in person and LIVE online. The top 2 bands from each night advances to the Secondary Rounds on FRIDAY 6/6, 6/13, 6/20 and/or 6/27. 2 winners from each of those nights with 1 wild card will advance to the SEMI-FINALS on SATURDAY 7/5 or 7/12 along with 1 wild-card band. The winner and runner up of the FINALS (on SATURDAY JULY 26th) OPENS The 2014 I AM FEST at House of Blues presented by the ELBO ROOM Chicago.

He injured dozens of people. He killed three. Evan West is one who was injured, and Jamie West, his wife of two years, one who died. She was just 27. Leaving the festival early, as Jamie had to be up for work the next morning, they were struck on their motorcycle near the intersection of Red River and 11th Street. Witnesses said that the driver, whose blood-alcohol level would later be measured at 0.114, accelerated as he fled, peeling through the crowds on Red River, which festival organizers had blocked off for pedestrians only. Jamie was pronounced at the scene. Evan was rushed to Brackenridge, a trauma hospital near UT. He had been severely injured, breaking his leg in three places, fracturing two ribs, lacerating his spleen and liver, and sustaining trauma to his brain. One On One With Suren Unka

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide has another exclusive interview just for you! Through the use of modern technology, she had a chat with New Zealander EDM artist, Suren Unka about his music from upcoming album "El Chupacabra".

 

SouthSide: What inspired you to name your album "El Chupacabra"? Have you ever heard of the Mexican stories about "the goat eater" before in New Zealand? Do you have such tales there?

 

Suren: Yes. I got the name from watching a documentary on the Discovery Channel about El Chupacabras. I was super fascinated by the tale and liked the sound of the words, "El Chupacabra". I decided I had to use it for my album tittle. This sparked a chain of naming some of my songs after interesting documentary’s Like ‘Lyuba’ ‘Weather Science’ ‘Uvula’ ‘Nanobots’ ‘Oryx’. All song tittles from my album.

 

SouthSide: In your opinion, does your current single "130" represent who Suren Unka is and/or what his music is about to fans?

 

Suren: Yes definitely. ‘130’ was the last song for me to write on my album. So it’s the current direction I’m going in. I still wanted to stick with the ‘Suren Unka’ sound from previous releases (Melodic). But add[ed] a slight dance element to the sound.

 

SouthSide: Using such unique rhythms and melodic beats in this particular song, could you see yourself as a visionary in the next wave of the EDM scene?

 

Suren: I am totally not sure. EDM is constantly changing. I can never keep up with all the EDM waves. So as a rule I decided to just make music that I would enjoy. Using sounds that suit me.

 

SouthSide: Will you be releasing any more singles off your upcoming album soon?

 

Suren: The album is coming out April 22nd. So I won’t be releasing any singles before then. But after the album is released, I’ll be releasing a music video for my song ‘Flee’ which is on the album.

 

SouthSide: Who would you say had some influence on your music? And if given the chance, which song (s) would you like to re-mix or collaborate with that artist/musician?

 

Suren: Four Tet [post-rock and electronic musician Kieran Hebden] is my hero! He has influenced me a load. I would love to remix his song ‘Sing’. Even collaborating with him, I feel I would learn so much.

 

SouthSide: Being a half a world away, how has modern technology contributed in your goal of reaching your new as well as current fans of your music?

 

Suren: The internet has been helpful especially Youtube. People from all round have been watching my music videos.

 

SouthSide: Do you have plans to perform live? If so, when and where can fans see you on the stage?

 

Suren: Yes, I perform live. I’m doing a New Zealand tour next month and thinking about touring Australia later on this year.

 

SouthSide: What is the local music scene like in Auckland, New Zealand? Besides Lorde, is there any other artist/musician or music genre that's making waves on the radio there?

 

Suren: Yeah at the moment this whole Bedroom Producer/EDM scene is at a high. There’s so much talent all round New Zealand. Some Artists to check out are Race Banyon, Kamandi, Black City Lights, Fly Nights and Team Cat Food.

 

SouthSide: Lastly, any last words, shameless plugs etc would you like to say about yourself and/or your music to the fans around the world?
