Hey, blogspot readers, many things are associated with Scotland ...haggis, bagpipes, Chvrches, Teenage Fanclub, Simple Minds, Biffy Clyro, Big Country, Donovan, golf and so much more. However, alternative blues/rock?! What do the Scots know about the blues?! That's how SouthSide first felt upon hearing guitarist Dave Arcari was making his return to Chicago's Reggie's Music Joint as part of his US Tour 2014. She couldn't believe it either. Dave was also part of the lineup that featured rockin' music performances by local country/folk/blues musician Lou Shields and real Ozark band from Arkansas - Mountain Sprout. Definitely not SouthSide's usual night with the bands yet it was an adventure not to be missed, blogspot readers, especially after meeting a musician like Dave Arcari!

 

This reviewer highly recommends checking out Lou Shields (http://www.loushieldsart.com) and his awesome selection of handcrafted guitars at his next live performance. She liked how performed songs, for example " Back Home" and "Get Out Of Your Way", with such passionate vocal fervor as well as with unique fingering and strumming. It's hard to describe the magic he created on his guitars, blogspot readers. This musician gave each note/chord strummed it's own instrumental personality to pop the lyrics (as he sang) to life. It may sound confusing from the way SouthSide but it's the best way she could describe Lou's performance to you. This is why you have to see him perform live to truly get a better understanding of his music and vocal style. His unique take on the country/folk sound was quite fascinating besides being energetic ...and at times, heartfelt. If you're in the Cookville, TN area for the Muddy Roots Festival, this reviewer suggests you make a date to attend his performance there on Aug 30th.

 

Just by his appearance alone, her first impression of Dave Arcari was "...he looks more like a metal guitarist rather than a Scottish blues musician who hones in the 50s/rockabilly..." He even performs on stage like he plays in a metal with all of the hopping and screaming (like a terrifying banshee) he does during his performance. Trust, this reviewer, when he says "...I'm nicer than I look...", he absolutely means it, blogspot readers, which was partly the theme of his set tonight. for me it's not [real] blues..." says Dave who also stated that he doesn't do covers or join in jam sessions when asked. He mention quite of an extensive list featuring notable names in music history that have influenced his blues music/sound to SouthSide. Names like "...Willie Johnson ...Bukka White..." as well as others "...Hank Williams ...Johnny Cash..." plus the other stuff that includes a bit of 50s rock-n-roll and rockabilly. Dave considers the British version of the blues to be flat, blogspot readers, because it contains the same chords over and over again.
And he's totally fun to hang out with too! The interview before his set on the Music Joint stage didn't feel like an interview. It felt more like old friends catching up on what's happening since Dave and SouthSide along with wife Margaret chatted about the wild summer rainstorm, Chicago's traffic, their time on Fearless Radio with Kris and Patrick and life as an ordinary rock star. He even complimented on her faux Scottish accent when saying his last name (thanks to that Scot ancestor in her blood). So what got Dave Arcari interested in becoming an alternative blues guitarist? Though buying a Johnny Cash compilation album featuring a number of his live recordings and session when he was young, Dave didn't grow up listening to the blues. However, you can definitely thank his bank job he had at the age of 18 for that Christmas bonus to which he spent it on his first guitar thus getting him interested in Bob Dylan. That help slowly gravitate towards blues artists such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and other ...but no Eric Clapton or British blues music for this Scot. "...

Now, when it comes to his music, he likened it to vegemite "...you either love it or hate it..." For the record, SouthSide hates vegemite! Speaking of food, this artist is driven by food and not by the typical rock star stereotype of drugs or sex. Dave mentioned to SouthSide that he has a smoker back at his home (outside Glasgow) in which he smokes pork butt, pulled pork, brisket, chicken but "...no smokin' haggis..." He even makes his own rub, blogspot readers, while Margaret makes the sauce for the meats. Though he's a carnivore, he does enjoy the vegetarian haggis to which this reviewer didn't know there was such a thing in Scotland yet she was told it's delicious. "...it [vegan haggis] almost tastes better than the regular haggis..." (Oh small note to Reggie's - they love the quesadillas!) When he gets home, he's going to try his own version of pulled chicken that he recently had a chance to try during his travels. He also had a couple of words about American whiskey too. According to him, it's "...too sweet..." even though Scottish malt whiskey "...tastes like ointment..." Funny. SouthSide then asked him about what's the music scene like in Glasgow after mentioning about the lost of the iconic nightclub, Clutha Vaults. He stated it's a healthy music scene citing "...Glasgow is the music capital of UK and [perhaps] Europe..." Dave told her there's a lot of indie bands that hail and/or performed at Clutha Vaults but it's not an easy scene to make a living there "...somehow we managed to make a living..." despite there's very little interest in blues music amongst the fans. He also wanted fans to know that he recently finished another live Daytrotter session and hopes to have it out by September. Lastly, Dave wanted to thank his fans too. "...without them, I wouldn't be able to do this ...and hope people [can] keep on supporting me..." as well as thanks "...the musicians who go out of their way to help us..." He loves their enthusiasm to know the people besides the music. On with the show, blogspot readers, and it wasn't what SouthSide was expecting from Dave Arcari either.

Let's just say, he's definitely the first crazed Scot this reviewer has met  to rock down a stage! Be prepared to what a guitarist become very agile and animated all over the stage throughout his set. Plus if he's performing in a venue like Reggie's where there's loud rock band playing on the other side of the wall, he takes it as a challenge to play louder than the, blogspot readers. "...going to drown out these fuckers next door..." he told the Music Joint audience before the start of his performance. This reviewer thinks he actually did perform louder than the band next door on Saturday night. Overall, it was quite intense ...excitable ...she was nearly exhausted simply by watching him perform his "short" set featuring songs like "Devil's Left Hand", "Bring My Baby Back" and "Got Me Electric".
To say, Dave Arcari electrified the stage would be an understatement though there aren't many words to fully describe the type of performance this reviewer witnessed, blogspot readers. He's definitely an entertainer who loves to perform loud while delighting the audience with his animated stage antics. Oh be forewarned, you might feel a chill in the soul when he does his banshee-like cackles or a thunderous roar over the microphone amidst his deep vocals. This guitarist did manage to squeeze in a Johnny Cash cover (and it wasn't the usual "...Ring of Fire shite...") during his set. No, this time, it was a rare cover version of "Blue Train" that had this reviewer thinking it was actually the Man in Black not Dave rockin' the stage. It's also the same song he did when the BBC ("...those corporate bastards who own everything...") asked him to be a part of their Johnny Cash tribute show. "...funny how whiskey makes you feel better..." quipped Dave before rockin' around the stage to "Hangman's Blues" and  "Close to the Edge", What didn't happened, blogspot readers, was his usual jumping off the stage which wife Margaret told SouthSide about ...only because there wasn't enough room and tables in front of the stage for him to do that after performing "Walkin' Blues".

Dumpster Hunter

"...this one's for Lou..." ~ Jeff Taylor of Dumpster Hunter

"...My songs plus trusted friends..." was how Jeff Taylor described his band, Dumpster Hunter, during an interview with SouthSide before dedicating his Reggie's Music Joint performance in memory of Lou Reed, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter of Velvet Underground. Yet that description also perfectly described the intimate atmosphere created while he and the band performed on stage to a setlist of songs off his current release, Frustration in Time Travel with a side order of stories ...including one about Lou Reed, blogspot readers. And speaking of stories, while hanging out at the upstair records store - Record Breakers, Jeff had plenty more to share about his recent stint performing Frank Zappa's 200 Motels along with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to how the band's album got it's title which is not a Doctor Who reference as this reviewer originally thought.

According to Jeff, Dumpster Hunter could have been "...my songs and nothing..." else but luckily it's not. This musician surrounds himself with talented friends like Steve Wall who engineered and produced the band's debut album because in his opinion "...it's more meaningful..." when working with friends. And "...working with friends is a guarantee when you're trying to make things feel natural..." That sense of friendship and performing with your talented friends was what SouthSide felt throughout Dumpster Hunter's set, blogspot readers. Amidst the melodic floetry and rhythms and harmonizing vocals, one can also see how this is simply more than a band on the stage but a group of friends enjoying each other's company. While reviewing the performance, she also did get that narrative feeling from Dumpster's songs like Cooped Up (a song about being on the road in which Jeff called it his "...cheesy but a good cheesy..." kind reminding him of Dire Straits) and River (a song about the time when Steve lost his home due to the hurricane). Jeff stated to this reviewer during the interview that he, while following different bands, likes to wonder what goes in the lives of the bands and their song catalogs. He hopes that during his performances he's saying something honest to his audience ...not hiding behind a mask. And River is one of those songs where the lyrics will spark the imagery inside your head amongst the staccato style going from a calming lull to the feel of the hurricane blowing.

There were no masks in this performance, blogspot readers. Everything was open as well as honest like Jeff said Dumpster's set would be to which left his Music Joint audience wanting more in the end. Performing other songs like C2 (his favorite) and Half The Code, the band surrounded this bar/venue with sounds of eclectic yet sometimes cosmic feel within in the rhythms and downtempo style that allows the ears to thoroughly enjoy what they're hearing. Most times, the music was a little organic too from a few beats from hand clapping to a capella and spoken word letting the written prose of certain songs to have its moment in the spotlight. As simplistic Dumpster's lyrics may be, there's an honest message to be heard with Jeff's natural falsetto backing the words. And SouthSide liked how Jeff's expressive body language help convey the tone and mood of his songs as seen during C2 when he not only sang but expressed some emotion through the use of his hands in this airy adult contemporary style tune. Meanwhile Half The Code showed the audience he could also be vocally as well as powerfully intense on the lyrics, blogspot readers, in which his body language gets more expressive but on the flipside, check out the band's pseudo-Jazz like sound for Heart Hard (which you should check out the YouTube video).

Oh the title of the album, Frustration In Time Travel, though he loves Dr. Who, has nothing to do with the British programme, blogspot readers. According to Jeff, the title came from a song when he and Daniel Hindman were in a band together back in 2000. As mentioned at the beginning of this review, Jeff recently performed Frank Zappa's 200 Motels (a 1971 musical that was cowrittern and directed with Tony Palmer and starred The Mothers of Invention, Theodore Bikel and Ringo Starr) with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. When asked how it went, Jeff responded saying it was incredible and fun ...that it was his first time acting in front of people as an adult not including the sketch comedy with his best friend. He also said that he found it "...quite easy to assimilate to Hollywood..." because no one "...didn't make me feel like an outsider ...[they] welcome me..." On Frank Zappa, both Jeff and SouthSide admire and respect the late musician's work liking his (Frank's) honesty as well as seemliness as a writer of prose. "...he has a very important literary voice..." Then this reviewer asked how did this special performance come about to which he answered they (meaning LA Philharmonic) picked it for the tenth anniversary celebration for the Walt Disney Concert Hall. "...they could have chosen Beethoven or Mozart..." instead liking they chose Frank Zappa and this particular musical. He described the performance as bolder as well as a memorable moment for all including the orchestra who appeared in tattered tuxedoes and bandages. Even though his soliloquy was cut, Jeff did get the chance to be at the conductor's stand and belt out an aria before doing a speaking piece. He noted that the LA Times said they did a tamer version of the play, blogspot readers, however in the 60s and 70s, times were risque unlike now.

Sadly, SouthSide's time was short with Jeff since he and the band had to eat before their show and she asked him to end with any final words or thoughts for his fans. "...to have a career in music as a performer ...it means there's someone else involved..." Jeff enjoys having fun with his fans like the interaction and would like to thank them even if they hate or love what he does. For Jeff and the band, it's a collaborative effort on everyone's part from the booking agent setting up the gig to people coming out the the show and buying (or not buying) a CD. That says something to him. Inherently, he's grateful for it all, blogspot readers.

Happy Birthday, Reggie's!

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide concluded her busy weekend with a little Bears football, yummy food, good fun and of course rockin' music at her Southside headquarters, Reggie's! She was this beloved dual venue/bar was celebrating 6 years of being a vital part within Chicago's local music scene. This locale has premiered plenty of top notch live shows (some in which this reviewer was lucky enough to cover for this blog) like hip hop/rap to Lollapalooza after parties (back in 2008) and rock as well as everything else in between. It's a cool place SouthSide (sometimes) called home. Over the last 6 years, she had tripped the life fun-tastic with such bands/artists - Hanzel und Gretyl, Lehnen (from Austria), Peelander Z, Blood On The Dance Floor, Magicks, Gearbox Fantastique II, Clem Burke, Makeshift Prodigy, A Birdsong Valentine, Hail The Black Dragons and more ...just to highlight some of the many shows seen, blogspot readers. To help kick off the celebration, local bands Fornication and The Shams along with Andrew Ellis (from Toledo, OH) rocked Bears and music fans on the Music Joint side of Reggie's while I Love Rich, Last False Hope, The Jetbirds, Downtown Brown and Angry Samoans featuring The Dictators (from NYC) as the headliner were performing on the Rock Club stage. 

SouthSide says check out the hard-hitting wickedness of intense punk/metal sexual rock performed by Fornication Station, blogspot readers. This local trio not only crushed the stage with loud, ear-screeching electric debauchery with some raw vocals on the microphone but also frightened away some of the die-hardest Bears fans out of bar due to the band's loud music! HA! Yet, that wasn't enough to scare away this reviewer. She was brave enough to witness what most couldn't handle ...such as the head-banging rock sound and electrifying riffs that nearly made her hair curl on the tippy top of her head. Yes, blogspot readers, this wasn't your ordinary punk/metal clash fusion of rock. Picture the Fornication Station as a "beer drinking dudes" type of band. Performing songs like Incarnation and Rock-n-Roll, the trio gave its audience simplistic lyrics  amidst a fast paced guitar rock style with no over the top complex riffs or long instrumental bridges. You didn't need that to enjoy "sweet" screech piercing the earplugs especially when they closed out their set with 13 Passed The Hour. SouthSide loved the wild and crazy guitar sound rockin' out the stage even though the band couldn't go wild and crazy since there wasn't enough room on the small stage to do that. After that wild and loud opening, blogspot readers, it was time to relax with the stories of love, heartache and lost by Andrew Ellis. This singer/songwriter troubadour from Toledo, OH told (or sung) his tales with heartfelt vivid that illuminated not only the words of each song but also picturesque imagery to make them pop to life. SouthSide was impressed by Andrew's strong vocal style to which she was easily touched by the emotional sentiments expressed while listening to him sing especially during his second song. It was truly amazing to feel his stories burst with colorful images in the mind in between listening to gentle vocal tone of his voice coupled with his acoustic riffs. For example, you could simply "feel" the remorse in knowing his mother would hate the song about being a bad boy during this rockin' country rockabilly ditty. The lively combo of Americana with this rockabilly sound did have this reviewer's feet tapping along to the upbeat acoustic rhythm. Then there was a moment when Andrew's voice got a little somber under a downtempo rhythm when expressing the tender sentiments in a song about being a poor fool. He did, however, livened the Music Joint with rousing sounds off his steel guitar when playing a slight parody about silver and gold to the rhythm of the Gospel classic - "To Thine Be The Glory". Behind this particular instrument, blogspot readers, Andrew's voice became quite vibrant and emotionally expressive ...soulful to highlight the country tone of his music like when he closed out his set with I'm Local. Four part harmonies were simply the tip of the iceberg of what makes this particular local band quite special, blogspot readers. The Shams Band boasts a unique folk/alternative rock sound that will feature some organic rhythms (i.e. tambourine) and 4 guitar (banjo, electric, bass and acoustic) sound in which immediately wowed the Reggie's audience with this vibrant explosion of music. It was good vibrations jamming on this stage ...having a good time even though opening the set to a song about having issues with whiskey and beer. Yet, how could they when this quintet was having so much fun?! Between performing songs like Breadwinner and Cold City, The Shams Band had this venue rockin' to the lively upbeat swing and harmonies as well as getting toes tappin' to some low down and dirty Southern blues rock. For this reviewer, it was this local band's voices in harmonizing unison that got her all riled up, blogspot readers. It didn't matter whether they were adding a bit of intense rock edge to their acoustic groove or electrifying the guitars to a gritty rhythm the harmonies were the main focal point throughout this performance. And with such harmonies, the songs were popping to life amidst vivid imagery like during Cold City despite getting the sense they (the songs) tend to get too serious and/or thought-provoking within the subject matter. Actually, that's how The Shams Band want you to feel. It's not too serious for them to have a rockin' fun time on stage. Versatile switching between music genres to vocal harmonies and lighthearted mood is what this local band is all about. "Cheers to Reggie's for 6 years of bringing live music to Chicago!" says the band before announcing they would be performing two Halloween shows - one at Martyr's and then at Tonic Room on the same night! The trick is - you have to attend one or the other ...or both to discover who The Shams Band will be impersonating this year, blogspot readers. Well, get ready because from the press releases about this annual event that SouthSide's been receiving lately, it's shaping up to be ONE hot rockin' festival of female powered rock on August 15! So far, it's been confirmed that Cradle of Filth's Schoolcraft will be making her third appearance as host of the Music Joint lineup and reuniting Luna Mortis will be headlining the Reggie's Rock Club lineup.

Hey, blogspot readers, ready to anime-nated?

Tonight at Reggie's Music Joint, it's a special pre-NATO rock show featuring the J-Pop/punk superheroes - Red, Yellow, Green, Pink and Silver of Peelander Z! They came to rescue Chicago fans from Mad Tiger and So Many Mike while rocking them with high engery of a fun punk/J-Pop/anime music combination. Yet with Peelander Z, it's more than just an ordinary rock show where you the audience simply watch them perform on stage. No, blogspot readers, you are part of the fun and action too. But before rockin' on planet Peelander Z, the crowd was treated to an epic performance of electronica/instrumental rock by Arc Impulse (http://www.arc-impulse.com). This local band powered their way with an exciting hour that featured renditions of video game themed songs from Zelda (2 and 3 included) Mario Cart as well as their own originals like Rainbow (a fantastical journey comprised of three songs rolled into one long epic masterpiece with some bars of Somewhere Over the Rainbow at the bridge). The electronic orchestra explosively filled the Music Joint with memorable gamer music, bursts of intense energy and momentum to the delight of the crowd especially when ending their show with a Rocky themed epic song.

They came from a distant planet in an uncharted galaxy far, far, far away called Peelander where everyone speaks Japanese, eats sushi and drinks saki, blogspot readers. And every so often, the colorful cast of anime-nated/punk musicians make perilous journey to Earth to whisk their Chicago (and elsewhere they roam) fans into the nether regions of the universe to experience a journey of music and fun. Peelander Z rocked out Reggie's Music Joint by incorporating the energy and sound of J-Pop with the intensity of punk rock and the action packed dazzle and fun of anime done live rolled into one hour of a performance. Yet, when you're having so much fun rockin' to songs So Many Mike, Mad Tiger and Lucha Libre (yes, it seems these "aliens" enjoy Mexican wrestling) like SouthSide was, it truly didn't feel such an amount of time had passed. Don't think just because the venue was a bit smaller that this band skimped on fun and excitement either. Peelander Z, though downscaling the rowdiness and action a little, still brought to their enthused fans everything that Peelander Z is known for. Whether it was participating in a group limbo line (how low can a group of adults go?) to jumping rope with Peelander band members and a Mad Squid ...or how about Mad Squid bowling and then baseball - there was something happening throughout this show. Believe SouthSide, all that and more happened inside this Southside venue, blogspot readers. There were moments of Red Z standing on the shoulders of a group of fans and then body surfing while playing his bass ...lucky fans rockin' stage on Peelander instruments and/or banging pans along with the band which truly intensified the crazy fun all around. Performing songs off their latest album, Space Vacation, Peelander Red, Yellow, Green, Pink and Silver also delighted their fanbase with favorites such as E-I-E-I-O, Learn Japanese and Ninja High Schooool (a retro rock-n-roll tune) as well as some new ones - Get Glasses, Space Vacation and Star Bowling. Still it wouldn't be a Peelander Z show without any mention of their favorite food to eat (besides sushi) like Taco Taco Tacos, Ice Cream! and S.T.E.A.K.(yes, there's a song about eating a medium-rare steak, blogspot readers!). Sadly, our journey had to come to an end but not before performing a goofy rendition of Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want Have Fun to Boys Just Want Have Fun.
