03 Oct 22 - Bloodywood

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide’s back this week checking out a few touring bands rockin’ the local stages around town!

Tonight, she’s at the Beat Kitchen getting her Bollywood-metal groove on with a band from New Delhi who recently has been rockin’ across America to sold out crowds. Bloodywood combining the intense metal music and sound with Hindi/Punjabi languages for lyrics and folk music not only completely impressed this reviewer but also wowed her by their stage presence and energy felt throughout the 90 minute set …which truly didn’t feel like a 90 minute show, blogspot readers.

Though checking out some of the band’s music before the show, SouthSide highly recommends seeing this band live and in person. The excitement, enthusiasm and energy from this five member group totally fuels the same towards their loyal fans song after song. It felt like an aerobic metal workout of the senses for the mind, body and soul. This reviewer found herself dancing and getting pumped up in a fast frenzy the moment the first song hit her ears and it didn’t stop until the very last note had subside.

That wasn’t enough for this crowd! They wanted more!. Bloodywood did not disappoint for one minute, blogspot readers! It was so much fun ...hopefully when they return, it will be at a larger venue like Cubby Bear or Metro to accommodate more of their Chicago fans.

Also, SouthSide highly recommends checking out the opening band –A Killer’s Confession. She enjoyed the visual and “I don’t give a flying bleep” kind of metal show This opening band gave the crowd an intensified screamo lyrical experience that was equally matched with Confession’s heart-pounding, thundering guitar rhythms …liquefying your metal soul during their set.

More fun for this roving adventurer about town, blogspot readers.

Tonight, she’s attending another SOLD OUT show featuring the lively group HoneyHoney currently on tour with singer/songwriter Sam Lewis and Ryan Joseph Anderson (with his band) – both from TN before heading out to Bottom Lounge for a bit of Xbox gaming and pinball with Jonathan aka Circuitry.

Though feeling his opening performance was better within an intimate setting than a mid-size venue, this reviewer recommends checking out the soulful country/blues singer-songwriter Sam Lewis. She enjoyed how this musician performed his set with a solemn yet tender acoustic style which wonderfully highlighted the emotions in his voice at the beginning until Ryan joined him for the rest of the set. Now as a duet, Sam’s music received that lively boost of rhythmic tempo and upbeat sound within the blues/country tone, blogspot readers. even though continuing to have a downtempo feel (sometimes). It was a good set yet this reviewer felt he should have jazzed it up a little instead of performing long winded ballads which at times lost most of the crowd attending this sold out show. For more information, visit http://www.samlewistunes.com.

After sharing the stage with opening act Sam Lewis, Ryan Joseph Anderson and his band was ready to kick off his CD release show with a rockin’ bang that immediately livened up the atmosphere inside this venue. In no time, this singer/songwriter switched the mood and tone of the lineup from somber love ballads to lively rhythmic tempos which had many grooving to the beat, blogspot readers, though keeping the music inside a country/alternative sound. This reviewer instantly liked the energy flowing throughout the room while listening to songs like When The Bees Went Mad to which Ryan’s vocals got a little rougher and deeper on the lyrics amidst the song’s danceable groove and gritty pop sound. It was the right song to push this crowd towards a festive mood and far away from the moody doldrums felt earlier until briefly taking that same energy down a bit for acoustic riffs inside subtle crescendo rise from the band backing him in the song that followed. SouthSide liked how his incorporated a touch of gospel/organ tone to highlight his heartfelt vocal pitch before zooming back to that intense energy of country rock and more. It was a nice balance, blogspot readers, of energize momentum and acoustic ballads which allowed the crowd to hear different side of Ryan’s voice whether it was heartfelt emotions or raw falsetto while tapping their toes to his upbeat country style. Sadly, SouthSide couldn’t stay for the end of Ryan’s performance (because it was getting too crowded thus causing the room to get overheated) yet she does recommend checking out Ryan Joseph Anderson with his band as he tours with Sam Lewis and HoneyHoney. For more information, visit http://www.ryanjosephanderson.com.

There would have been a full of Geek Out/Freak Out for you, blogspot readers, however it was scheduled during Game 1 of the NHL playoffs featuring Chicago Blackhawks playing against St. Louis Blues ...the triple OT lost didn’t help generate the right crowd SouthSide’s friend Jonathan aka Circuitry was hoping for. Still she did spend some time testing out the pinball game selections featured in the upstairs Volcano Room of Bottom Lounge. Hopefully this monthly event (happening every 3rd Thursday) returns in May (SouthSide plans to review it again) with more gamers from all levels testing their skills against each other while Jonathan spins industrial to post-punk and more until 2a (or earlier). Events like this cannot survive and/or thrive without full support from fans like you, blogspot readers.

It was a swansong of a performance, blogspot readers...

Tonight, SouthSide’s out and about within the Roscoe neighborhood rockin’ Beat Kitchen for one last ride with her longtime friend, Mr. Russia. She has reviewed this local band since its humble beginnings at the former Ronny’s to Metro and many Double Door appearance. So it was fitting for her to be there to bid a fond farewell to Ryan, Ivan and Rob of Mr. Russia. Coincidentally, it was also Ryan’s last performance before leaving Chicago for the bright lights of L.A. Supporting this band’s swansong show was touring Ohio bands Graves and History’s History with local band Fitness opening.

Though performing in front of a sparse Chicago audience, blogspot readers, both Ohio bands, Graves (http://www.gravesohio.bandcamp.com) and History’s History (http://www.historyshistory.com) rocked the Beat Kitchen stage under two unique sounds of rock music. However, it was Graves’ set that left this reviewer confused. She had a difficult time comprehending the strange lead guitarist Matt’s vocals-music combination. Neither one complemented each other throughout the set since it sounded as if he was actually screaming the lyrics into the mic instead of singing. At times SouthSide wondered if he was going for a screamo vocal style despite his voice was straining hard. Also, this reviewer was confused by Graves’ core rock sound. It was a cross between hardcore and melodic guitar rock. in all honesty, blogspot readers, SouthSide tried “feeling” this touring band but couldn’t. There could have been more audience-band interaction such as mentioning song titles before or after a couple of songs especially the new ones performed.

History’s History had a bit more tolerable performance even though it wasn’t this reviewer’s type of rock music featuring hardcore yet melodic sound. This band had the energy to rock out this fairly sizable audience but sadly, blogspot readers, she wasn’t truly feeling what their Ohio fans were feeling throughout the set. There were moments which left her scratching her head especially when History’s History would zip into a fast chord change between hardcore and melodic without allowing the ears to gradually adjust to the switch. And despite being big on instrumental floetry within song bridges, SouthSide still felt something was missing or lacking that could have her “feeling” the band more. In the end, it was a short performance due to the front man’s have minor vocal problems (his voice was straining) ...having guest vocalist on History’s songs didn’t help either.

It was a trip down memory lane during Mr. Russia’s swansong performance at Beat Kitchen, blogspot readers. Fans crowded the back room to hear classic songs like “Pretty Girls” (in which they merched panties), “Damage” and more that featured the gritty double bass punk rock sound. Yet it wasn’t all punk with this band. They did try their hand with a little disco as heard from the song “I Explode” which had many (including this reviewer) dancing to the rhythmic beat. It’s what Mr. Russia did best during their time in the local scene – they exploded. “...If we play it [It’s True], maybe Summer will come ...what a girl named Summer?” before Ryan took lead vocals during the song “Temper”. And for not playing together in a couple of years, the band rocked extra hard and sounded great. Still, blogspot readers, it was saddening to see Mr. Russia perform its final live show as the band ended with its first song, “Boys” after wishing Ryan well. A sentimental end (since Ivan Russia doesn’t like getting emotional) but not to worry ...he did promise another exciting band to come in the near future. This reviewer would like to salute Mr. Russia for the many fond music memories wishing each member luck in their future endeavors...

04 Apr 13 - Counterfeit i

Hey, blogspot readers, come spend an intense evening full of anger with SouthSide. Yes, there’s a “new” wave of rock appearing in pockets here and there within Chicago’s local scene called “anger” rock from bands like Evil Twin Sister that can vividly express raw frustrated emotions through their music and lyrics. Recently at the Beat Kitchen, this reviewer met another such band that expressed not only vivid anger but also intense pain and heartache told from personal experience within an energetic, vibrant sound. If you want experience pain and anger, blogspot readers, then she highly suggests you check out Counterfeit i at the their next performance.

This trio lit up the Beat Kitchen stage with a rousing eclectic mesh of keyboard/programmed sounds and live instruments which was technically one half of the driving force propelling Counterfeit i’s “anger” rock sound. It was loud ...thunderous and full of vibrant energy, blogspot readers. In a way, you could say, the music itself was a member of the band since it sometimes shaped as well as defined the mood and tempo for each song performed during the set. For instance, take the song 241 – this reviewer enjoyed hearing the furious frustration being lashed out at the intro (and throughout) in which she felt the music was personifying the pain and hurt of a tortured soul. Mood swings can be intense but feeling them within a harsh “anger” rock sound. Yes, it’s killer but this is the reality you face when in pain.

The other half to this unique equation would be front man and guitarist Derek on vocals who puts a face to anger (from his own personal experience of chronic depression and anxiety) that many of us (at one point or another) could relate. Using these same experiences, he spotlights the highs and lows while also showing there’s solace at the end of rocky tunnel of intense emotion. There were moments during this band’s set when SouthSide literally felt her face melting from the heated venom spewing over the mic in between bouts of calm. She highly recommends checking out Counterfeit i’s single, Still, where Derek demonstrates that there’s hope after experiencing an emotional tide of agonizing pain. SouthSide, from her own personal experience, can somewhat relate feeling such raw emotions but not quite as intense or on the same level as Derek or you, the person reading this blog entry. Yet, this reviewer enjoyed how his vocals could vividly convey that charged energy especially during the song Age of the Machines. Rage at its best without being so over dramatic.

For more information about Counterfeit i and where this local will be displaying its anger rock at a venue near you, visit http://www.counterfeiti.bandcamp.com.

16 Nov 12 - Chicago Roots Collective fest

Photo0307 ~ Andy Metz performing

Hey, blogspot readers, it may be a bit chilly to hold a festival but it's not too chilly to attend night one of Chicago's hot rockin' 2-day event. Tonight at Beat Kitchen, this reviewer was there for the opening festivities of the 4th Annual Chicago Roots Collective in which features some of the best singer/songwriters and bands performing on two floors.

Upstairs, SouthSide did check out a part of the acoustic acts where her friends Bassel and Andy Metz (bassist of Hero Monster Zero)were performing along with others featured in the lineup such as Kathy Greenholdt, Matt Burke, The Western and Anthony Galdino with Jarryd Scott Stemier headlining. After opening his set with an emotionally charged tune called Death and Taxes (in which Andy's voice projected such vocal fervor on the lyrics while highlighting a heartfelt tone), this singer/songwriter entertained the listenting audience with some selections from his band Hero Monster that also included a song inspired by an epic poem. There was where Andy did rock the stage with his vocally charged tone and furious acoustic riffs to match the energized momentum felt surrounding the upstairs room. And even while performing in a melodic downtempo rhythm, Andy wonderfully projected such emotion and fervor on his lyrics that he made you feel what he was feeling at the time of composition before including the audience to help him out towards the end. SouthSide highly recommends checking out Andy Metz and his rockin' band - Hero Monster Zero at http://www.facebook.com/heromonsterzero.

Meanwhile downstairs, bands like The Future Laureates, Jeff Brown and Band Called Catch were rockin' the stage opening for Molehill and Ewing Theory. Despite missing her friend's, The Future Laureates, set, SouthSide did enjoy  the final few minutes of her other  friends, Band Called Catch (http://www.myspace.com/bandcalledcatch) and their hot performance which included fun songs like Moon Pie and Done It Again as well as the customary frisbee toss where some lucky fans were able to win cool band merch prizes before turning the stage over to her friends - Molehill for their show. After thoroughly frightening the audience a little with the blaring sound of an air raid siren, this local band kicked off their set with a boisterious clash of piano-driven alternative/rock sound.  After not seeing this band for over two years, blogspot readers, SouthSide noted the distinct change in sound and intensity Molehill projected throughout the set thus immediately liking the band's "new" look and music especially the emotionally charged energy featured in the chorus (during No Reprieve) when the vocals were combined with heartfelt and dynamic tone. Nope it wasn't the same band she had seen on stage at Joe's On Weed St. Molehill definitely upped their rock sound (as well as image) for more powerful energy and fury to electrify the stage with intense guitar riffs and crescendo rises that (at times) left you breathless for that burst of momentum at the bridge. Such energy did have this crowded back room rockin' to the heart-racing tempo especially during Almost Broken. Featuring other songs like I'm Okay, Money Life and Wildfire, Molehill did project a certain amount of profound sadness to their highly energized performance when performing the song The Fall (dedicated to an old friend) where this reviewer honestly felf the pain and angst experienced from the lyrics. Yet what truly made this song quite special was the energized gusto that rocked out the conclusion of the song. Also, Molehill got a little futuristic and space-like with their music during F# to which had this crowd dancing to the electronica soundwaves before rocking the stage to an epic-sounding intro to Control which suddenly had this venue overheated from the bodies moving to the rhythmic beat especially while dancing along with the band to Interlude. SouthSide highly recommends rockin' to the "new" electrifying soundwave projected by Molehill at their next performance, blogspot readers. For more information, visit http://www.molehillmusic.com.
