06 Oct 22 - Reign of Z & Modern Mimes

Hey, blogspot readers, it’s part two of SouthSide’s adventures around town! This time it took her to Avondale’s legendary dive bar known as Live Wire where she had the extreme pleasure of meeting two power house female-fronted bands when their tour recently stopped in Chicago. And what this reviewer experienced from both bands was something more than just intense vocals and heart-pounding metal music. She  experienced some raw emotions felt from each female singer from their unique vocal styles.

To kick things off was the opening band, Black Cat Heart Attack, blogspot readers, to which this reviewer (at first) had a hard time deciphering their music because it was all over the map. Throughout the set, they touched metal, rock, alternative, grunge and more yet somehow in a very strange way it worked! SouthSide found herself digging this weird music vibe especially at the bridge when the band lets the sound ride within a full 70s psychedelic wave. Add some rough throaty screamo vocals and the classic Ozzy Osbourne Black Sabbath hand clapping type of animated body language and stage presence, you got one hard rockin’ opening set that finished with a loud bang, blogspot readers!

 Reign of Z

In her many years of covering live music shows, SouthSide has met and heard bands featuring male front vocalists belting raw screamo emotions from gut-busting (like Brian Bender of A Birdsong Valentine before his Boy Band Review fame) to recently seeing Jayant of Bloodywood at the Beat Kitchen. However, this reviewer had never met any female vocalist matching the male counterparts with the same powerful intensity and feeling until now, blogspot readers. Meet Zosia of Reign of Z in her KISS-inspired boots and she will definitely make …actually force you to feel what she feels during their hard-hitting live set. SouthSide was left wondering where did she get that power and intensity to vent such anger and frustration channeling her raw emotions into songs like Ignite and Hate. Zosia and Reign of Z doesn’t just perform songs exhibiting the brutally raw animalistic vocals and metal sound, blogspot readers.

This band draws upon her personal experiences from the exes in her life to domestic abusers like in the song Reflections. And with her stage presence, there’s no holding back in what she sings about these things from her past …her life story is an open book only if you dare to read, experience and feel what she felt at that moment of her life. Honestly, SouthSide has been there herself too. We all have at one point or another. Reign of Z’s performance had the Live Wire audience feeling every ounce of hate bubbling from the stage as it was meant to be – very hot and angry coming from deep inside This reviewer highly recommend checking out their latest single, Cellophane hearing it recorded did not prepare SouthSide for the live version. Also, meet and chat with Reign of Z before or after the show – they have plenty of tales to tell you about life on tour living out of the van (not down by the river …points if you know where that reference is from), blogspot readers.  Modern Mimes

Meanwhile, Modern Mimes is another band, blogspot readers, this reviewer also highly recommend checking out at their next live performance especially for its lead vocalist Adi and her soulful sultry voice and expressive body language. And, yes, she will make you feel each and every intense explosion of emotions through songs like Facedown and Down & Dead. SouthSide was truly impressed when Modern covered a Nine Inch Nails song yet making it their own with a splash of Soul and Southern rock intertwining the hardcore metal sound. It definitely packed a punch, blogspot readers, when they closed with Love Hate …a strong finish that had everyone inside Live Wire feeling the intense double guitar/bass shredding (by Ernesto who btw was fun to watch) and vocals. Too bad both sets were short because this reviewer wanted more. For more information, visit http://modernmimes.com.
